Industrial Water Treatment Plant Vitelco Leather

The water treatment plant treats wastewater from the Vitelco Leather tannery. This plant is managed and owned by Waterstromen. The water is transported from the tannery in the center of Lichtenvoorde to the water treatment plant (next to location RWZI Lichtenvoorde) with a pressure pipeline of approx. 2 km. Among other things, the water contains high concentrations of COD, nitrogen, sulfide, sulfate, chromium, salt and lime.

Techniques used

  • Cyclone for capture of coarse particles
  • Methane reactor (IC reactor) + biogas flotation and digester
  • Sulfur reactor (elemental sulfur production)
  • Partial nitrogen oxidation reactor
  • Anammox reactor for nitrogen removal
  • Biological desulfurization biogas
  • Biogas is converted to green gas (see BIR)
  • Heat is taken from BIR’s heat pump plant

Design details

  • 700 m³/day
  • 5,000 kg COD/day
  • 450 kg N/day
  • 450 kg S/day
  • 25 kg Cr/day
  • Biogas production: 300,000 m³/yr.
